BY AGNES JURY (MASON)For the winter newsletter, we meet one of our newest members, Livingston County FOC Referee Jason Blevins. Jason grew up in Indiana, earned his B.A. from Ball State University in 2007 with a double major in Political Science and Criminal Justice, and earned his J.D. with dual concentrations in International Law and Criminal Law in 2010 from Michigan State University. After law school, he returned to his beloved home state and passed the Indiana bar in 2010. Jason was a solo practitioner for nearly four years and is proud to say that in several published cases, the Court of Appeals block quoted his written work and adopted it as binding law. After practicing in his home county along the Indiana/Michigan border, Jason decided to take the February 2012 Michigan bar. He later became the only research attorney to the Circuit and Probate benches in Muskegon County. In 2016, Jason moved to Oakland County and served as a staff attorney to a circuit court judge assigned to the family division. Family law must have ignited a new fire in Jason because during the early portion of the COVID pandemic, Jason returned to law school and earned his L.L.M. in Child and Family Law from Loyola University Chicago. In September 2023, Jason became a Livingston County FOC Referee. Jason feels privileged to be a referee because it’s the perfect role for his mix of private sector litigation experience, civil and domestic relations mediation practice, broad academic excellence, and public service desires. But, like many of us, he does wonder about the long-term ripple effects of his recommendations. He also worries about the worldwide decrease in civility and increase in nationalism.
Jason is passionate about international law and would trade places with Karim Khan, Chief Prosecutor for the International Criminal Court for a day. Jason’s personal interest show in his choice of three people (dead or alive) he would love to have dinner with: Aron Naumovich Trainin (a renown Soviet jurist and criminologist), Chester Nimitz (fleet admiral in the United States Navy), Marshall Mathers III (aka Eminem). The most awe-inspiring place Jason has visited is Pripyat, Ukraine, which is being reclaimed by nature after nearly 50,000 residents suddenly abandoned it in the wake of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. His favorite vacation is a tie between exploring Chernobyl for three days in 2017 and visiting The Hague, Netherlands for a week in 2023. Jason’s love of travel (or at least desire to skip getting to/from his destination) is clear because if he could have one super power it would be teleportation. He wishes someone would invent the transporter from Star Trek (his favorite TV show). His dream “drive” is a helicopter. Jason resides in Waterford, Michigan with his wife and his wife’s three cats. During his free time, Jason enjoys swimming, fencing, reading (currently reading Colony One Mars, and Nimitz Class) and singing. Please welcome Jason to RAM. We all look forward to meeting you soon!
